COGNITIVISM

Cognitivism is a learning theory that focuses on how information is processed, stored, and retrieved by the human mind. It suggests that the mind actively processes information through cognitive processes such as perception, attention, memory, and reasoning.

Learning Scenario

Mrs. Hines, a culinary teacher at a high school, starts her lesson by providing the essential materials and equipment required to prepare a two-layer lemon cake. Mrs. Hines opened her lecture by declaring, "Today we will learn to use simple ingredients to bake a two-layered lemon cake. "After entering the student's area, Mrs. Hines asked, "What are the two most important baking considerations?" Madison answers, “Having all the ingredients and following the recipe.” Mrs. Hines says, “Yes! Two essential components of baking are preparation and following the recipe.”

Mrs. Hines emphasizes the significance of the preparatory step since baking is an exacting science. Mrs. Hines cautions her students that their cake would not come out the way they had hoped if the ingredients are not measured precisely. Mrs. Hines gave a demonstration on how to start baking the cake. After the demonstration, Mrs. Hines asked the students to pair up. Mrs. Hines asked Betty and Veronica to demonstrate how to begin the cake. Betty and Veronica followed Mrs. Hines instructions and preheated the oven to 350 degrees, then measured out the dry ingredients.

Mrs. Hines asked “What is the next step?  Several students raised their hands. Duncan and Sarah answered, “Adding the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients.” Mrs. Hines acknowledged Duncan and Sarah and said “Yes, that is the next step to achieve the right texture.” Mrs. Hines then asked Gordon what the next step was, he replied, “Mixing the ingredients and pouring it into the pan, then bake until it is golden brown.” Mrs. Hines said “Exactly!” Mrs. Hines then asked the students, “What did they learn today?” They replied, “The importance of following the recipe and preparation to bake a cake.”
